While the 2022 World Cup will undoubtedly be a star-studded event, there will be some big names missing from the upcoming tournament.
The likes of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo will be there but some players will be taking a mid-season break after their countries failed to qualify.
We’ve taken a look at 10 of the best Premier League players that definitely won’t be playing at the World Cup in Qatar.
Mohamed SalahWhile Salah has developed into one of the best players in the world during his time at Liverpool, he hasn’t had much luck in international tournaments.
The forward went into the 2018 World Cup carrying a shoulder injury and wasn’t at his best as Egypt exited at the group stage. He hoped to put things right in Qatar but missed his spot-kick in Egypt’s World Cup play-off final defeat to Senegal.
Despite the fact that he isn’t playing at the tournament, Salah is still looking forward to watching the 2022 World Cup.
“I may be in Qatar during the World Cup,” he said in an interview with BeIN Sports. “I feel very happy that the tournament will be held for the first time in an Arab country. Everyone in the Arab world supports Qatar. I think the 2022 World Cup will be special.”
Erling HaalandDespite being one of the most in-form players in the world right now, Haaland will be watching the World Cup from his sofa.
The striker scored five goals in six appearances for Norway in the World Cup qualifiers but missed their final four games due to a couple of injury problems.
Norway picked up five points out of a possible 12 from those four games and finished third in their group, behind the Netherlands and Turkey.
Martin OdegaardHaaland’s international team-mate, Odegaard has gone from strength to strength at Arsenal and is now living up to his enormous potential.
The 23-year-old is also regarded as one of the best midfielders in the Premier League and was given the captain’s armband ahead of the 2022-23 season.
He’s also the captain of his country and was hoping to lead Norway to a first major tournament since Euro 2000 but they just fell short.
Luis DiazThe second Liverpool winger to feature on this list, Diaz hit the ground running after joining the Reds from Porto in January.
He’s also showcased his skills on the international stage, scoring four goals in five games as Colombia came third in the 2021 Copa America.
But Diaz and Colombia were unable to continue their good form into the World Cup qualifiers and they won’t be at Qatar after finishing sixth in CONMEBOL’s qualifying standings.
“Since I was little I dreamed of wearing this shirt and wearing it with pride in a World Cup,” Diaz tweeted. “It hurts too much not to have achieved it.
“I keep wanting to fight for this dream, on my part you will have my commitment and know that I will leave everything to achieve that goal. We will have revenge.”
Pierre-Emerick AubameyangDespite representing France at youth level, Aubameyang decided to follow in his father’s footsteps and play for Gabon.
The striker has enjoyed a sensational career at club level but wasn’t able to lead the national team to their first-ever World Cup.
During the 2022 World Cup qualifiers, he scored two goals as Gabon finished second to Egypt in their group and missed out on a play-off spot.
The 33-year-old, who is Gabon’s all-time top scorer with 30 goals in 73 appearances, has since decided to retire from international football.

The left-back hoped to lead Scotland to their first World Cup since 1998 but they lost 3-1 against Ukraine in the play-off semi-final at Hampden Park.
“After a really positive campaign, we’ve let ourselves down tonight,” Robertson told Sky Sports after the game. “It’s taken us 11 games to get here, after a positive campaign.
“Finishing second and getting a home play-off, it’s going to hurt. We need to reflect on tonight and tomorrow’s a new day. That’s the World Cup gone for another four years and we all have dreams of trying to play in that big tournament and we didn’t put in a performance to justify that tonight.”
Dejan KulusevskiKulusevski has made an instant impact at Tottenham, forming a brilliant partnership with Harry Kane and Son Heung-min.
The 22-year-old is also regarded as one of Sweden’s brightest young talents and has already won 27 caps for the senior side.
But he won’t be showcasing his skills at the 2022 World Cup after goals from Robert Lewandowski and Piotr Zielinksi gave Poland a play-off final win over the Swedes
Oleksandr ZinchenkoZinchenko spent six years at Manchester City and has recently made an impressive start to his Arsenal career following a £32m transfer.
At international level, he produced a brilliant performance against Scotland in the World Cup play-off semi-final, helping Ukraine to a 3-1 win at Hampden Park.
They then faced Wales in the final but Gareth Bale’s free-kick was deflected into his own net by Andriy Yarmolenko for the only goal of the game.
“Every one of us gave everything today, we left everything on the pitch,” Zinchenko said. “The goalkeeper for Wales [Wayne Hennessey] did amazing, he is definitely man of the match. In general I don’t think we deserved to lose, but that’s football, it happens.
“Football is about emotions, we can bring some great emotions to our fans, but unfortunately today we didn’t get the result we wanted.”

Riyad MahrezMahrez has enjoyed a lot of success in England, winning four Premier League titles, three EFL Cups, the FA Cup and the Championship.
But the Manchester City forward has made just one World Cup appearance for Algeria and won’t be adding to that tally this year.
Despite beating Cameroon 1-0 in the first leg of their World Cup play-off, Algeria were eliminated on away goals after losing 2-1 at home in the second leg.
Algeria’s football federation (FAF) complained about a number of ‘scandalous’ refereeing decisions and launched a request for the second-leg to be replayed but FIFA rejected it.
JorginhoAfter helping Chelsea win the Champions League in 2020/21, Jorginho then played an integral role in Italy’s success at Euro 2020.
But he missed two penalties during their World Cup qualifying campaign, which allowed Switzerland to win the group on goal difference.
Italy had to take part in a play-off semi-final but Aleksandar Trajkovski’s last-gasp strike for North Macedonia ended their hopes of reaching Qatar.
“It hurts when I think about it, because I do still think about it and it will haunt me for the rest of my life,” Jorginho said when reflecting on his penalty misses.
“Stepping up there twice and not being able to help your team and your country is something that I will carry with me forever, and it weighs on me. People say we need to lift our heads and carry on, but it’s tough.”
The midfielder, who was born in Brazil before moving to Italy at the age of 15, has now admitted that he’ll be supporting the Selecao in Qatar.
